How to Prepare for the ARDMS® RDCS Adult Echocardiography Exam | GCUS Guide

Are you preparing to take the ARDMS® RDCS Adult Echocardiography Exam? Read this!!

Earning the Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) credential through the ARDMS® Adult Echocardiography (AE) exam is a key step for sonographers specializing in cardiac ultrasound. The exam is designed to evaluate a candidate’s ability to apply echocardiography knowledge in clinical practice, including cardiac anatomy, pathology recognition, Doppler hemodynamics, and imaging techniques.

Exam Overview

The ARDMS® RDCS Adult Echocardiography exam tests a candidate’s ability to perform and interpret echocardiographic studies in real clinical scenarios.

Exam details include:

  • Approximately 150 multiple-choice questions, including hotspot questions
  • 3-hour testing time
  • Scaled scoring system from 300–700
  • Passing score: 555

Exam Content Outline:

The ARDMS® updated the RDCS (AE) exam content outline April 25, 2025. The current content outline reflects the core competencies required for cardiac sonographers in clinical practice.

The exam is divided into several major domains:

1. Cardiac Anatomy and Physiology (15%)

A strong understanding of cardiac structure and function is essential for interpreting echocardiographic findings and identifying abnormalities.

2. Pathology (40%)

The largest portion of the exam focuses on identifying and evaluating cardiac disease, including:

  • Valvular heart disease
  • Cardiomyopathies
  • Pericardial disease
  • Congenital abnormalities
  • Cardiac masses and thrombi

3. Clinical Care and Safety (11%)

This section covers patient care considerations, clinical protocols, and ultrasound safety.

4. Measurement Techniques and Sonographic Views (25%)

Candidates must understand:

  • Standard echocardiographic imaging views
  • Measurement techniques and calculations
  • Doppler hemodynamics
  • Imaging maneuvers used during cardiac ultrasound exams

5. Instrumentation and Image Optimization (9%)

Candidates must understand ultrasound physics principles and how to optimize image quality during echocardiographic examinations.

Preparing for the RDCS Exam with GCUS

Because many questions require clinical reasoning and image recognition, candidates must develop a strong understanding of echocardiography concepts rather than relying solely on memorization. For over 40 years, Gulfcoast Ultrasound Institute (GCUS) has provided high-quality ultrasound education for physicians, sonographers, and healthcare professionals.

The upcoming Adult Echocardiography Registry Review Virtual Conference (May 15, 2026) provides an intensive review of high-yield topics covered on the ARDMS exam. Designed to help candidates review key concepts, reinforce clinical understanding, and focus on the topics most commonly tested on the ARDMS® exam, our Adult Echo Registry Review Virtual Conference helps candidates approach the RDCS exam with confidence and a clear understanding of what to expect in a convenient online learning environment.

Participants benefit from:

  • Expert-led, interactive echocardiography lectures
  • Focused review of registry exam topics written in full accordance with the current ARDMS® RDCS(AE) Exam Content Outline
  • Registry-style practice questions

Another unique benefit of the GCUS registry review packages is access to a dedicated Facebook study group.

This community allows participants to:

  • Ask questions
  • Discuss difficult concepts
  • Share study strategies
  • Connect with other registry candidates

Peer discussion and collaborative learning can significantly enhance retention and understanding during exam preparation.
