Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) continues to expand quickly, having a positive impact on patient care and outcomes. Although typically thought of as being performed by physicians, this bedside exam can, and is, being performed by healthcare professionals including nurses, advanced care providers, and medical students and residents. These providers are utilizing POCUS to make rapid clinical decisions, resulting in decreased time to diagnosis and/or treatment. For example, The National Institute of Health stated the time from triage to a patient being discharged or admitted decreased on average from 220 minutes to 95 minutes when POCUS was utilized to evaluate for deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Given that PE is the 3rd leading cause of cardiovascular death in the United States (American Heart Association), it is clear that the use of POCUS is a critical tool for patient assessment and management. The tremendous rapid growth supports this as healthcare providers continue to realize the benefits of POCUS for their patients, including decreased cost, decreased length of hospital stay, and overall improved care.
