Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a non-invasive, accurate imaging modality that can be used to diagnose a variety of musculoskeletal injuries and disorders. Unlike MRI, the use of diagnostic ultrasound provides dynamic information pertaining to the abnormality since the scans can be performed while moving the joint of interest through range of motion maneuvers. A wide variety of conditions may be evaluated and potentially treated using diagnostic and/or interventional ultrasound. A partial list of MSK conditions that can be evaluated using ultrasound include:
• Tendinosis
• Tendon and ligament tears
• Bursitis
• Joint fluid
• Peripheral nerve entrapment syndromes
• Rheumatology conditions
Many interventional procedures may be performed using ultrasound guidance such as joint aspiration/injections, hydro-dissection techniques, and regenerative medicine procedures. Ultrasound guidance for interventional procedures provides a higher level of accuracy, improved treatment success, and patient safety as compared to “landmark techniques” since the clinician can see exactly where the needle is being placed.
Ultrasound guided regenerative medicine procedures such as prolotherapy, PRP, bone marrow, and lipo-aspiration techniques can improve healing time, and in many cases eliminate the need for surgical interventions.
MSK ultrasound requires training to perform and interpret these examinations. Gulfcoast Ultrasound Institute (GCUS) offers introductory level, advanced level, and regenerative medicine musculoskeletal programs. A variety of educational formats are offered to provide the most flexibility and options to best meet the educational needs of the medical professional. The comprehensive courses are highly interactive with leading MSK expert faculty and provide hands-on skills training is with the lowest participant to instructor ratio in the industry (3:1) allowing the participant to immediately begin integrating the skills learned into clinical practice. Courses include didactic session, interactive case studies, and scanning skills workshops with live patient models, inanimate phantoms and human cadaveric specimens.
The programs are offered in a traditional education format, blended education (combined online lectures with hands-on only workshops), or private one-on -one hands-on skills training. Customized onsite programs for groups is also available by request and can be held at the GCUS education center or your healthcare facility. All courses are also approved for AMA PRA Category 1™ credit.
