What are the benefits of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Written by: Trisha Reo AAS, RDMS, RVT

Benefits of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

In comparing ultrasound to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, when performed by an experienced professional, has proven to be as effective as MRI with less expense and increased mobility. Ultrasound also proves useful in cases where MRI is contraindicated, such as patients with metal implants or who are claustrophobic. Ultrasound has demonstrated a 93% sensitivity in diagnosing partial thickness tears in the rotator cuff and allows differentiation between full thickness and partial thickness tendon tears with greater ease than MRI.

With its numerous diagnostic abilities, the use of ultrasound is growing rapidly amongst physicians, chiropractors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, physical therapists and other medical professionals specializing in sports medicine, orthopedics, rheumatology, PM&R, pain management, emergency medicine, regenerative medicine and other musculoskeletal related fields. With little or no experience using ultrasound as a diagnostic tool, you may be wondering how you can incorporate this useful tool into your practice. That is where Gulfcoast Ultrasound Institute can help.
