Practice is key to performance. We all know this. You wouldn’t run a marathon without training for it. Why would you enter the exam room without ever simulating the exam first?? It just seems counterintuitive. Practice makes perfect and mock exams are a great practice tool.
Preparing for a registry exam requires implementing multiple review strategies. But did you know that some of the most commonly used review techniques are actually least effective, including highlighting or re-reading key information? A big reason for this ineffectiveness is these techniques don’t require deep and critical thought about the topic being reviewed. These techniques are often done passively, almost on auto-pilot. Testing yourself has proven to be an effective way to improve knowledge and ability to recall information.
Mock exams are a great opportunity to identify and overcome how exam pressure and anxiety may affect you. Exam stress can manifest itself in many ways, including making silly mistakes that cost you valuable points. It is better to identify how exam stress will affect you in advance and develop the skills to overcome it, or at least cope with it.
Mock exams also provide an opportunity to develop exam day skills. Remember... the goal here is NOT to memorize the questions. That will not help you. Instead, focus on strategy! Practice reading the question completely, asking yourself what the question is asking you, decide what you think the correct answer is and THEN read the answer choices. This will dramatically reduce the chance that the "detractor" answer(s) will trip you up.
Mock exams, when used correctly, can be incredibly beneficial. They provide a great preparation framework, prepare you for exam day stress, and help you develop strong exam taking skills.
