Objectives

  • Outline the instrumentation and technique necessary for properly evaluating the breast using diagnostic ultrasound.
  • Recognize the normal and abnormal breast anatomy from embryologic development to the effects of pregnancy.
  • List the indications for both mammographic and sonographic evaluation.
  • Recognize the features of benign, malignant nodules, and associated sonographic pitfalls.
  • Outline and compare the sonographic and mammographic appearance of lesions found in the breast.
  • List the types of complementary imaging modalities and identify the various post-surgical changes associated with the breast.
  • State the sonographer’s role in performing non-surgical, ultrasound-guided procedures.
  • Identify areas of weakness that may require further study for successful registry examination completion

Audience

Physicians, PA’s, sonographers, and other medical professionals who will be involved with performing and/or interpreting breast ultrasound examinations. Medical professionals preparing to take the breast ultrasound certification exam. Physician specialties may include (but are not limited to) OB-GYN, radiology, primary care, and family practice.
