Overview

The POCUS for Internal Medicine Live Training Course provides participants a strong foundation to perform and/or interpret all of the core ultrasound applications in an urban and rural internal medicine setting as outlined in the AAFP, ACEP ultrasound practice guidelines.

This course is taught by leading family medicine, internal medicine, and emergency medicine ultrasound experts and incorporates comprehensive lectures focused on outpatient and inpatient clinical applications, interactive case presentations, and extensive hands-on scanning sessions. The hands-on scanning sessions feature a 3:1 participant to faculty ratio with standardized patient models and inanimate phantoms to allow the learner to immediately integrate the skills learned into clinical practice.

In this two (2) day program, participants will learn all the core ultrasound applications for Internal and Family Medicine as outlined in the current AAFP guidelines. Each participant also receives scanning checklists for reference purposes and a case log of exams performed that may be used for credentialing and/or POCUS certification purposes.

Objectives

  • Increase the participant’s knowledge to better perform and/or interpret Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Critical Care ultrasound examinations.
  • State the basic fundamentals of ultrasound physics and demonstrate appropriate optimization for system controls.
  • Differentiate normal/abnormal image characteristics of the abdomen and aorta.
  • Demonstrate scan protocols for focused evaluation of abdomen, aorta, adult heart, and DVT.
  • Perform ultrasound evaluation of the trauma patient (E-FAST exam), pulmonary, ocular, and soft tissue/musculoskeletal applications.
  • Demonstrate image orientation, transducer preparation, and scan protocols for performing use of ultrasound guidance for central & peripheral vascular access, thoracentesis, paracentesis, and lumbar puncture.
  • Outline scan protocols for ultrasound evaluation of appendicitis, small bowel obstruction, hernia, ovarian and testicular torsion, epididymitis, and varicocele.
  • Increase competence to incorporate protocols, scan techniques, and interpretation criteria into clinical practice.
